From Kas to Athens

It is April 2 already and we must say goodbye to Turkey now and this morning we move on to Greece. The three of us got up to a beautiful, sunny day. We cleaned up the house and grabbed a quick bite to eat before we headed to town to return the car. Tom and Val stopped by and went to town with us. After checking in with the ferry boat operator and surrendering our passports we walked over to the boat where the police officer read through the documents and, after he cleared each of us, called each of our names and we boarded the Meis Express. We hugged and said fond farewells to Tom and Val, got on the boat and settled in for the short ride across the bay to the Greek island of Meis.
Just a short 20 minute ride took us to a new country. As we crossed the boundary from Turkey into Greece the bright redflag with white crescent and star replaced by the flowing blue and white stripes and cross of Greece. The captain told us he would take our documents to the
After about an hour the big ferry from Rhodes rounded the corner of the island, blowing it's horn with a spout of steam into the blue sky. It is a huge boat and as it maneuvered around in the narrow bay it spread across the water, blocking access until departure.
Passengers streamed off the boat, meeting and greeting friends and family, and then the cars and trucks deboarded, and then it was our turn. We walked up the plank, stowed our bags and mounted the stairs up and up to the passenger decks, where we took a seat in the sun. With a new blast of the horn we were off to Rhodes.

As we steamed along we passed the peninsula outcropping from Kas, and past our wonderful Gokseki house, and continued north along the coast of Turkey. After awhile we went inside to a cozy warm room with plush seats and blackout drapes and Don and I took a nap. Before we knew it we were approaching Rhodes . We prepared to debark and waited in the lobby as the captain maneuvered the big boat into it's slip.

We took a cab to our hotel, the Lydia, which was located right in the heart of Rhodes. After some minor adjustment to our room arrangements we settled in and headed out for a walk around the town.
